Avodart (Dutasteride) |
Avodart is approved in the US for treatment of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia, the same condition Proscar addresses. As with Proscar (finasteride), Dutasteride is also effective in treating male pattern baldness in men.
Whereas Finasteride inhibits the activity of only type II 5- alpha reductase enzymes, Dutasteride inhibits both type 1 and II, making it a much more powerful weapon against hair loss. (see chart below)
Avodart should not be used by women or children. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle this medicine.
Men taking Avodart should not donate blood until at least six months after their final dose to prevent the medicine going to a pregnant woman through a blood transfusion.
Men with liver disease should talk to their doctor before taking Avodart.
